Whatley is one of two ‘super quarries’ situated on the Mendip Hills in Somerset. Around 70,000 tonnes of carboniferous limestone is lifted from Whatley every week, destined for the building and construction industries.
Hanson Heidleberg UK commissioned IES to replace its Legacy GEM80 controller with an integrated Siemens Solution. Providing a current product which also captures KPIs for business reporting and enhanced plant operation and efficiency.
With over 2000 I/O points and the requirement to implement the upgrade without a single days loss of production needed careful planning and liaison with our client.
In order to implement this change the new Siemens S7 controller and Win CC SCADA was integrated, such that part or all of the system could be switched over during non-production windows and the full changeover made once the new system was fully commissioned.
The new controller also boasts additional power management and has increased the efficiency of the plant by more than 10%, allowing the client to substantially lower their carbon footprint.
The project was brought to a successful conclusion without incurring any loss of production.
